Inching toward the release of his fifth album Herbert, Ab-Soul sat down with Okayplayer for a new episode of On Demand. Throughout the interview, the Carson native spoke to us about being a part of Black Hippy, who he considers to be the top five greatest hip-hop labels of all time, and much more.
Starting off with “What does Black Hippy mean to you,” Soul first responded by calling his fellow Black Hippy members — which includes Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q and Jay Rock — “Gang n nem,” and added that they’re “My brothers, man. It was a genius way for us to bring all of our audiences in one room.” He also shared that ScHoolboy Q actually came up with the supergroup’s name.
Elsewhere, Soul was asked to offer his top five rap labels ever, which he kicked off by mentioning his home team Top Dawg Entertainment as one of them. His other favorites included No Limit Records, Death Row Records, Cash Money Records and Bad Boy Records, the latter of which he chose during a toss-up with So So Def Recordings. “Don’t hate me JD,” he joked, referencing So So Def founder Jermaine Dupri.
When asked about one producer he’d create an album with, Soul chose longtime collaborator Sounwave, who brought him to Top Dawg Entertainment. The rapper was also asked to reflect on an “irresponsible” purchase he’s made in his life, sharing that he “snuck” and bought the explicit version of Eminem’s 1999 The Slim Shady LP, because his mother would only let him buy clean versions of albums.
Along with his On Demand appearance, Soul sat down with us for an interview centered around his upcoming new album Herbert. The project, which has guest appearances from Jhené Aiko, Joey Bada$$, Ambre, Russ, Big Sean, SiR and more, drops on Friday, December 16. So far, he’s released singles “Do Better” and “Gang’Nem” from the album.
