DJ Khaled Leaves Epic Records For Def Jam

In a surprise announcement before a room of international media and supporters, DJ Khaled revealed he is leaving Epic Records and taking We The Best Music to Def Jam. The new venture with Universal Music Group also named him Global Creative Consultant at an exclusive press event in Miami.

DJ Khaled’s imprint, We The Best, is now at Def Jam. Khaled will be leaving Sony Epic where he has released his last 5 albums, including the recent God Did. “I had an amazing career over there,” DJ Khaled spoke of his time with Epic Records. “My last five albums have changed my life.”

He also shouted out iconic record label executive, Sylvia Rhone.

“What we did over there was beautiful,” he continued. “I appreciate the team over there and our friendship is forever.” 

The rapper-producer was also named Global Creative Consultant. This would allow him to work with all labels at the world’s music conglomerate, Universal Music Group. 

The super sports fan held a private event styled like a post-game press conference with distinguished media members to celebrate the move to Def Jam.  He likened his announcement to Lebron James’ 2010 announcement that he was taking his talents to Miami Heat.

“It’s 2023, and like Lebron James said when he had his press conference, and said he is bringing his talents to Miami. Well, I am bringing We The Best And DJ Khaled to Def Jam Records.”

Looking ahead, fans can expect a follow-up to 2022’s chart-topping “God Did” on Def Jam.

As for The We The Best roster including — Steph Lecor, Kent Jones, Flipp Dinero, Ace Hood, and Vado — they too go to Def Jam. Making them labelmates with 2 Chainz, Dave East, Jeezy and Jeremih.

Khaled was also honored with the key to the city of Miami and Miami Beach for his continued community service. 

By proclamation, Feb. 9 is now considered as We The Best Day in Miami with Nov. 26, Khaled Khaled Day in Miami Beach.

Amid all the raving “best” news and applause from supporters and friends in the room, Khaled also announced a new shoe deal with Jordan and Nike.  The Khaled shoe is expected to be released toward the end of 2023.
