Noname is bringing some Sundial to July. On Sunday (April 9), the rapper and spoken word poet, legal name Fatimah Nyeema Warner announced her upcoming third album Sundial, scheduled to be released in July.
Sundial comes five years after Noname’s 2018 debut album Room 25, which featured Smino, Saba, Ravyn Lenae, Phoelix, and more. Room 25 followed Noname’s 2016 mixtape Telefone, which garnered high acclaim from music publications and artist peers alike.
The Instagram post for Sundial would make Noname’s latest album announcement, nearly three years after she shared that her sophomore LP would be titled Factory Baby. In December 2021, the Noname Book Club founder canceled the album’s release and apologized in a tweet for “leading people on.”
Following Room 25, Noname has occasionally released singles including “Rainforest” and the Madlib-produced J. Cole diss “Song 33,” a response to Cole’s “Snow on tha Bluff.”
In a 2021 interview with Rolling Stone, Warner shared that she and Cole had spoken on the phone two days before “Snow on tha Bluff” was released.
“We’ve had each other’s numbers for a few years and we’d text little shit, but my friend came up with this idea to have artists sign this open letter to the industry that [said] we were going to refuse to perform at venues or spaces that hire police,” Warner said.
Later Warner would discover that “Snow on tha Bluff” was largely about her, although Cole denied it, later encouraging his fans to follow the 31-year-old on Twitter. “I love and honor her as a leader in these times,” he tweeted at the time.
