In the hip-hop world, where women have consistently struggled for recognition, Netflix’s upcoming docuseries Ladies Night: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop has garnered much anticipation. The series boasted a star-studded cast, including icons MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Rah Digga, and rising stars Coi Leray and Latto. However, fans quickly noticed rap superstars Nicki Minaj and Missy Elliott were nowhere to be found.

Podcast host and personality Shawn Allen, was quick to address the fans’ concerns on Twitter. When a user asked if the plan was to include Nicki Minaj in the docuseries, Allen’s response was both candid and disappointing:
“Yes, but it didn’t make sense because she didn’t give us any licensing.”
As similar sentiments arose about Missy Elliott, it became evident that both iconic rappers had not licensed their music for use in the docuseries.
Speculations surrounding the exclusion of the “Super Freaky Girl” rapper started to swirl. Allen suggested that Nicki might have been unavailable due to her involvement in an upcoming documentary with HBO Max. However, the exact reasons behind the Supa Dupa Fly artist’s decision to withhold her music remain a mystery.
While fans were excited about the inclusion of various influential women in hip-hop, the absence of the one female rapper who had seen massive success in the industry for years left many feeling disappointed and frustrated. Nicki Minaj’s devoted fanbase, particularly, took to the internet to express their dismay.
The docuseries’ release date is set on August 9 on Netflix. The docuseries is set to highlight more than just specific women in hip-hop but also the contributions of female rap that helped mold the culture into what it is today.

Some fans have voiced their concerns over the notable absence of iconic rapper Nicki Minaj from the lineup stating, “You have to acknowledge Nicki Minaj when it comes to Women in hip-hop. This disrespect to her legacy is exactly why Barbz go so hard. Nicki Minaj has had a longer and more successful career than any of these women ya’ll shown and has done more for MUSIC in general as well.”
Another user defended Minaj, stating, “You cannot have a show, conversation, or story about female hip hop without Nicki Minaj.. not under any circumstance. Anytime after 2010, she has to be apart of the discussion or you’re wasting everybody’s time. Seriously.”
