Allow Us to Re-Introduce Ourselves

Method Man, who’s credited as executive producer of former Hulu series Wu-Tang: An American Saga, hasn’t watched a single episode of its three seasons. While on Kevin Hart’s podcast, Golden Minds, the Power Book II: Ghost star explained his reasons for never watching the show, where he was portrayed by Dave East.
“There was never in the history of music, where a group signed as a group with the option to sign as solo artists with other labels,” Meth told Hart. “Labels, the one thing they don’t do, is play nice with each other. They’re not gonna share money. So to have me on Def Jam, GZA on Geffen, and Raekwon at the home team Loud — you had these three labels working together for our cause. Unheard of, unheard of. Which, in terms of changing the game, that’s changing the game right there. You had people actually asking for Wu-Tang deals.”
The rapper, legal name Clifford Smith, Jr., said he realized that the show didn’t exactly match his vision, so he instead stepped back to let other members of The Wu, namely RZA, strategize.
“So to see this come to fruition on screen, it was a no-brainer for me knowing how RZA works,” he said. “In the beginning, it was like, ‘Wow, they’re taking a lot of liberties here with the story.’ In hindsight, knowing how some of these things work, and embellishments and sometimes dudes still be having open cases and shit so I could understand. I haven’t watched an episode, personally, but I get the scripts ahead of time. Everything ain’t for everybody, that’s all I could say.”
Hart then asked if Meth bringing negativity into the project was his reason for not watching An American Saga, which the 52-year-old seemingly confirmed.
“I did not want to mess with their process. These people get paid to do these things — I mean you’re talking about Hulu and Imagine. Imagine, Brian Grazer. Sometimes you gotta step back and keep your opinions to yourself.”
Having premiered on Hulu in 2019, Wu-Tang: An American Saga was a fictionalized take of the East Coast rap group, starring Ashton Sanders, Shameik Moore, Siddiq Saunderson, TJ Atoms, Dave East and more.
