Allow Us to Re-Introduce Ourselves
Lil Wayne gives a glimpse at how Tyler, The Creator operates when collaborating with other artists. Even Weezy F. Baby gets told what to do now and then.
While the internet debates whether or not Lil Wayne is really as clueless as he seems regarding some of rap’s most iconic moments, the New Orleans rapper is grabbing attention for his thoughts about one of hip-hop’s most respected talents: Tyler, The Creator. Following the arrival of Weezy’s Rolling Stone cover story last week, a few interesting quotes and moments that didn’t get included were shared a few days later on April 19. One gem surrounds the Young Money leader’s work with Tyler on the 2024 track “Sticky,” also featuring Sexyy Red and GloRilla.
Studio sessions can be the norm, but with the busy schedules these guys have, that’s not always an option. “Tyler just sent that,” Wayne said of the song, which climbed to No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 last year. He also revealed that the Odd Future founder’s feature requests “always come with instructions.” “Tyler, you crazy as f**k,” Weezy expressed. That statement seems to be said with no malice. Wayne was told by Tyler to do a verse, but there should be an understanding that Tyler might split up the bars.
Knowing that Tyler produces and arranges his own music, none of this comes as a surprise. He’s meticulous and precise about his creative process, truly living up to his rap moniker. The best thing about this anecdote is that Wayne didn’t let ego get in the way of another solid collab. He clearly has respected Tyler’s vision from the start. They’ve been joining forces for a decade.
“Sticky,” which appears on Tyler’s lauded Chromakopia album, marks the fourth collaboration between the two rhymers following 2015’s “Smuckers,” 2017’s “Droppin’ Seeds” and 2021’s “Hot Wind Blows.” Wayne’s feature on the track set another milestone for him since it extended his streak of consecutive years with a Billboard Hot 100 appearance to 21. He could add to that when he drops Tha Carter VI album on June 6. Wayne revealed some of the guest appearances to come, and while Tyler isn’t confirmed on the project, their track record for fire releases can only mean more “crazy” Wayne and Tyler collabs isn’t far-fetched. Let’s get another lighter flick for these two.
