Yesterday, Megan Thee Stallion’s assault trial against Tory Lanez officially began at the Los Angeles Superior Court. The Toronto artist, real name Daystar Shemuel Shua Peterson, was charged with assault with a semiautomatic firearm, which was allegedly used to shoot Megan in the foot.
Prosecutors have filed a third felony charge against the Canadian rapper for the discharge of a firearm with extreme negligence. Lanez already faces 22 years and eight months in jail if found guilty of previous counts, which will remain so.
The new charge does not affect the sentence length because it is related to the alleged conduct. Hence, any sentencing would run concurrently.
According to The Sun, Peterson’s lawyer may use Kylie Jenner and her mother, Kris Jenner’s longtime boyfriend, Corey Gamble, as defense witnesses since the shooting incident occurred shortly after Kylie’s pool party at her Los Angeles mansion in July 2020. Rolling Stone’s senior reporter Nancy Dillon took to Twitter and revealed neither Gamble nor Jenner have a written statement,
“To clarify: Tory’s lawyer admitted in court he doesn’t have witness statements from Kylie Jenner or Corey Gamble yet (prosecutors asked). So it’s not clear what they might say if it would even be relevant,” Dillon said.
In addition, Megan’s former friend Kelsey Harris may also be called as a witness during the trial.
After yesterday’s trial, Superior Court Judge David Herriford decided to terminate Tory Lanez’s house arrest, which was placed in October after Lanez was involved in a physical altercation with August Alsina.
