2023 is shaping up to be a year of wins for Missy Elliott. On Tuesday (May 16), the Virginia native was announced as a “Celebration of Legends” honoree of the National Museum of African American Music in Nashville. The event, where Atlantic Records will also be honored, is scheduled to be held at the museum on June 2, just in time for African American Music Appreciation Month. Also expected to attend the event is Mýa, who appeared on 2001’s “Lady Marmalade” with Elliott, Lil Kim, Pink, and Christina Aguilera.

The honor makes Elliott’s second achievement of the month, after she was announced as the first female rapper to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The institution called her “a true pathbreaker in a male-dominated genre,” also announcing DJ Kool Herc, Chaka Khan, The Spinners and others as inductees into the Rock Hall.

Earlier this month, Elliott got her praise after performing at the Lovers & Friends music festival. At the Las Vegas event, Elliott debuted her track “The Greatest,” seemingly a nod to her recent accomplishments.

Alongside Dr. Dre, Lil Wayne, and Sylvia Rhone, Elliot also received the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award at the Recording Academy Honors in March. During her speech, Elliott recognized Rhone, who led Elliott’s first label, Elektra.

“She saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself,” the four-time Grammy-winner said of Rhone. “She never told us ‘No.’ She never told me, ‘You need to lose weight.’ She never told me, ‘You need to change your records.’”
