‘The Queen of Disco’ Donna Summer is getting her flowers in a new HBO documentary. The company has released a trailer for the upcoming film Love to Love You, Donna Summer, directed by the vocalist’s daughter, Brooklyn Sudano, and Roger Ross Williams.
The documentary will include footage from Summer’s live performances to never-before-seen home videos, which are a “deeply personal portrait of Summer on and off the stage.” The trailer shows Summer, who died in May 2012 after a battle with lung cancer, recording “I Feel Love” with her husband, producer Giorgio Moroder, along with unreleased recordings. “I have a secret life. You’re looking at me, but what you see is not what I am,” the late singer says in the trailer.
HBO explains that Love to Love You is “shaped by Summer’s own reflections, the memories of close family, friends and colleagues, and filled with the sounds of Summer’s songs, Love To Love You, Donna Summer is an in-depth look at the iconic artist as she creates music that takes her from the avant-garde music scene in Germany, to the glitter and bright lights of dance clubs in New York, to worldwide acclaim, her voice and artistry becoming the defining soundtrack of an era.”
From 1975 to 1984, Summer placed a Top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 every year. She has won five Grammys, including best vocal performance in both female R&B and rock categories, and received nominations for thirteen others.
Last year, Summer’s “I Feel Love” was sampled on “Summer Renaissance,” the final song on Beyoncé’s seventh album Renaissance. Beyoncé earned four Grammy Awards for her work on Renaissance this year, including Best Dance/Electronic Album.
Love to Love You, Donna Summer comes to HBO on May 20. Watch the trailer below.
